Arrival in Munich, recovery, visits to local sights and pick up the bikes. You will start with local rides and then ride through one mountain pass, at 1900 m elevation, visit to a castle (extraordinary photo opportunities!), and then into Austria. Exhilarating riding along the autostrasse through many tunnels, through more mountain passes and a ski resort.
Big travel day so we are off to an early start. Along the autostrasse into Switzerland, through tiny Liechtenstein, and more Swiss autostrasses with beautiful scenery. We stay at the home of William Tell, and then more mountain passes, the stunningly beautiful lake at Interlaken and then down another two perfect mountain passes into France.
Overnight under the watchful eye of Mount Blanc, and then two days of
almost limitless riding options.
Fast and flowing curvery - think Snowy Mountains NSW on steroids- the Route
des Grandes Alpes is nothing short of a motorcyclists
dream. Everything from tight little single lane traffic-less climbs into alpine
meadows, to racetrack-like smooth perfection. Very few straight bits. Picturesque Lac
d' Annecy, Massif des Bauges and La Vanoise national
parks (complete with incredible roads!) all in easy reach.
And don't forget
the French food.
Climb out of the valley up the Col Du Petit St. Bernard (2188m). Yet
another stunning road - endless corners (of course). There is no equivalent
in Australian terms. The gain in height is most similar to climbing
in an airplane. Descent is racetrack smooth again. We head to the autostrada
for a brief blast before the challenges of Italian traffic to round off
the day. Overnight we visit typical rural Italian towns, on the edge of
the vineyard country. Pizza, pasta, red wine - bella!
Beautiful scenery and more chances for photos, some Italian traffic (all
part of the experience) and the autostrada.
By Day 10, we are heading back to the Alpine passes through Italy and Switzerland. We climb Malojapass (1815m) , with the tightest and most frequent hairpins anywhere, then more sweeping, flowing high Swiss valley riding before yet another up-and-over; the Ofenpass Pass dal Fuorn (2149m). This one is more open radius corners to contrast the tight sharp climb of the Malojapass. We squeeze in a 3rd pass for the day, the highest in all of Europe; the Stilfser Joch (2757m).
Back to the favourite country of Alpine Europe, we give three basic riding
options - cruise, medium or "go large'".
Cruise: Jaufenpass (2480m), then onto the A22 autostrasse
and a whole afternoon and evening playing tourist.
Medium:
As above, but take the historic Brennerpass (1375m). Beautiful old
scenery, majority of which winds through a stunning river valley.
Still plenty of time to play tourist!
Go Large: Take on the Timmelsjoch (2509m), a must for
the riding obsessed!
No speed limit Autobahn into Germany. We clean the carbon off the top of the motor, and let some adrenaline clear the arteries. Beautiful scenery, albeit a little blurred! There are 'no-autobahn' alternatives if you'd rather another Romantische Straße. Give the bikes back, and overnight in Germany (dependent on flight times).
